In Laos, all healthcare costs are 100% the responsibility of families, although in some cases this is impossible. ASAS has had the opportunity to assist some individuals who requested help with health-related questions.

The healthcare system in Laos is very limited, and medical care is accessible primarily to the wealthier segments of the population. Health insurance is either nonexistent or extremely rare, and when someone needs treatment, self-medication with herbal remedies or consulting shamans are the most common practices.

Moreover, hospitals are often far from the villages, requiring several hours of travel. Sometimes villagers pool resources to cover travel and hospitalization costs, as all medical care—even in extreme emergencies—must be paid for in advance.

L’ASAS has been asked on multiple occasions to cover hospitalization or treatment costs for individuals who do not have the income to pay for care.
