The Lau Water Solidarity Association
L’ASAS funded a workshop for 150 girls
December 2015
We visited the village of Ban Xieng, whose secondary school has over 400 students. The journey was, as always, challenging due to the poor road conditions. However, we received a warm welcome, and the workshops soon began.
The facilitation team was well-prepared, despite the sensitivity of the topic. Most of the girls knew nothing about puberty, the onset of menstruation, or how to manage it while at school. As a result, many of them are fearful, practice poor hygiene, and miss several days of school each month. This often leads to falling behind and, in some cases, dropping out entirely. Early pregnancies are another consequence of this lack of basic knowledge about bodily changes.
A few minutes into the workshop, the girls began to relax and smile. Each of them left with her own educational booklet and a hygiene kit.
The project continues today in even more remote areas, where the lack of information is even more pronounced. A huge congratulations to the team for their outstanding work.
